What is Logotherapy?

Short-term individual intervention with a meaning-orientation. Particularly useful for those experiencing a sense of despair. Suitable for anybody wanting to shift their perspective when facing a challenging situation.

Logotherapy is both a life philosophy and a form of therapy. As a therapy it is based on the principle that we find healing through finding meaning. Logos is a Greek word translated as "meaning.”

Logotherapy is based on the work of the late Dr Viktor Frankl, who was a Viennese psychiatrist and neurologist, and Holocaust survivor. His most famous book, Man’s Search for Meaning, is regarded as one of Amazon’s ‘100 Books to Read in a Lifetime’. In this book he details how a meaning-centered focus helped him and others to survive the concentration camps psychologically intact. He also gives a brief overview of the theory of Logotherapy.

For healing, Logotherapy is intended as a short intervention when individuals are faced with a challenging situation. The logotherapist facilitates the process of meaning-discovery for the participant. The aim is to help the participant discover solutions that already exist within themselves. Each participant is regarded as a unique three-dimensional individual, who, at their core, is whole and intact. It is a forward-looking, positive and practical intervention. It emphasizes the importance of making the right choices and taking responsibility for our attitudes and responses in every moment.

Some advantages of logotherapy (LT) are that:

  • Participants achieve a shift in perspective in about 1 – 6 sessions

  • Participants learn tools to apply to future life events

  • It can be used in parallel with any other psychotherapy or psychological modalities.

Logotherapy has been applied widely in healthcare (mental health, palliative care, clinical genetics, addiction and substance abuse, dementia care) and in the business world. I have successfully used the intervention for patients with genetic and other medical conditions, parents of individuals who have genetic conditions, and for non-medical clients.
